Ain Kroumir

The Kroumirie features a geomorphologic mixture unique in Tunisia: rugged steep coasts, many miles of fine sandy beaches, often accompanied with extensive dune fields, in the hinterland deeply carved valleys, here and there filled with artificial lakes or accompanied by small and quiet rivers, but most of all: mountains and plateaus covered with extensive oak forests and reaching heights of up to 1.200 meters.

The Kroumirie is the eastern branch of the North African Atlas mountains, which was formed at the same time as the Alps.

The mountain ridges composed of soft chalk-beds and overlying sandstone are intensely folded. Strong erosion caused by heavy rainfalls has led to a pronounced fragmentation of the original landscape.
